METALLICA
Some
Kind of Monster
Bruce Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger's documentary on the life of Metallica the band and as individuals too. They spent three years documenting James, Kirk, Lars and their families both in and out of the studio. Going into this, I think that no one could imagine the events that would lead to Metallica changing forever. Especially not James, Kirk and Lars
You are one band member short. Your producer is the filling in on bass and your band is falling apart in front of your eyes. What a thing to look forward to. 20 years you have given your blood, sweat and tears all to have it almost slip away in a couple of months. This is the feeling that most Metallica fans have when they see this film. For those fans who have been there from the beginning you feel like you are a permanent member and to see James and Lars yelling at each other to the point where you think that the phrase" Fuck you I quit" may just be said. A slap of reality you really don't want to see. They have been apart of our extended family through good times and bad. The phrase, "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder" should say, "Beauty like perception is in the Eye of the Beholder". We saw what we wanted to see in Metallica. Although some of the characters in the play of life may have changed over the years, we still saw and felt ourselves through them. Performing our roles for the whole world to see. Maybe if Metallica said it loud enough and fast enough the rest of the world would get it. This film however, proves that the characters themselves were putting on their own individual performances for them and us.
Some kind of Monster will open you eyes and appreciate all that Metallica has given and sacrificed both personally and professionally. You will laugh, cry and truly understand where Metallica came from, are now and where the future might take them. If nothing else, you will see James, Kirk and Lars grow into the men we always thought of them to be and for that I will always be grateful. Thanks to James, Kirk and Lars for getting the help needed to see them through the other side. If only the rest of the world could be so brave.
